Lake Lanier retirement

I have heard so much about Lake Lanier and what a great place it is, etc. The wife and I have considered retiring there, but we don't know much about it. For instance, are there real towns there, or is everything just spread out around the lake? Is there golf as well as boating and fishing? I wonder what it is like to retire there full-time?
