Just got back from a trip to Florida and we drove through Amelia Island Plantation and Fernandina Beach. Didn't realize the connection between the 2 before. On the one hand, i loved the charm of Fernandina Beach - a little funky but very interesting. Looks like a community. My wife loved Amelia - it is so pretty and perfect, and the recreation is great. Anyone have any insight into which place is better to live?

There is a great article in the NYTimes today (march 27, 2009) about this area: "Florida Beaches with Genteel Southern Charm". They loved Fernandina Beach with its victorian buildings and 50 blocks on the National Register of Historic Places. Plus Fort Clinch State Park. Pros are this barrier island feels like a casual Key West beach town yet its close to Jackson's airport. Cons are that it tends to get colder during the winter than people expect for Florida.

The real answer is they are both really great. Almost wish i could afford 2 homes - 1 in Fernandina for funky, and 1 in Amelia for the golf/tennis etc _________________ Site Gadfly - Enjoy the site - and post frequently!
