Hale's Location is an unincorporated township in New Hampshire and an example of a place with both low taxes and municipal services. That's not always the case when going without formal town government.
For a state born in the revolutionary spirit of "no taxation without representation" (Hale's Location is named for Samuel Hale -- uncle of Nathan Hale, the patriot hanged as a spy) and the long tradition of Town Meeting and Presidential Primary participation, New Hampshire is a great place to "live free or die."
Hale's Location combines a great lifestyle: access to New Hampshire's 800,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest and 1200 miles of hiking trails including a section of the Appalachian Trail, 48 peaks for mountain and ice-climbing (Cathedral Ledge, famous for its ice-climbing school is just above Hale's Location and Echo Lake, a New Hampshire State Park is down a walking path) and some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the world. Living here is a four-season delight: pristine landscape, no state income tax, no state sales tax and 400 years of carefully preserved history.
There's a selection of homes for sale ($750,000-$3 million) with the advantage of very low taxation (eg $3.08/$1000) plus homeowner's association fee covering full police/fire/water services. In addition to the New Hampshire outdoors lifestyle Hale's Location is home to the White Mountain Hotel (reisdents have access to amenities including the heated outdoor pool for a $300 annual fee) for and for the health club and restaurants. Great guest accommodations for visitors, too!
According to a report in Kiplinger's a survey of retirees said what most wanted was good medical care nearby, low taxes and lots of leisure activities (hiking, golf). Hale's Location offers all of that in the state that perennialy rates #1 for safety. Be here in time for the 2010 foliage season! |
