My friends and the newspapers are always talking about retiring to Arizona, North Carolina, and of course - Florida. Seems like New Mexico ought to something to try to promote retirement there - if they are interested in that form of economic development. The state has so much going for it, too bad it is a retirement afterthought. Anybody disagree?

My friends from Albuquerque are always telling me to keep how great it is a secret. After all, who wants south Florida or Phoenix kind of traffic and sprawl. It's a great town that's growing plenty fast - let's keep it that way.

I would add just one comment about New Mexico retirement. There just arent that many places to retire there. Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe- they're all great, but not nearly as big as their Florida, Texas, and Arizona counterparts.

Shhhh!

Not sure if this will post twice but my comment disappeared so I am submitting it again.

I just returned from NM scouting out 55+ Communities. I went to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Belen, Alamogordo, Los Lunas, Las Cruces and Carlsbad. I didn't like Albuquerque too dense and lots of poverty. I loved Santa Fe, Las Cruces and Carlsbad. I also think it is not as hot in NM as Arizona and Las Vegas. 350 days of sunshine and cool nights is what is attracting me there not to mention the beauty of the state. I still have lots of looking around and I will include Arizona before I make my final decision.

i was trolling around another site, eons.com, and found a good discussion about places in New Mexico. My friend LIGuy has been there and this is part of what he reported to the group-you can tell he wasnt impressed. But, you should see it for yourself to judge: (see quote from another visitor below his)

The Las Cruces Farmer's Market is a hype job. It is open two days a week Saturday and (I believe) Wednesday. We were only there during the week but we were told that the Market was a worthwhile visit so we went. There had to be more action in a cemetery. There were maybe 3 or 4 vendors and a few stores and all I saw was junk. If there was a down town area we must have missed it because I didn't see anything. I'm not saying the place was horrible but it was too quiet for a small city. A lot of the homes we saw were over a 15 minute drive to a supermarket and some places it was even further. But the homes that we looked at were quite nice and very reasonably priced. As I recall there was only one major shopping center in the whole area."

Here is a different opinion though:
"absolutely love the place.... there is (like many college towns) a great Arts community.... fantastic music... great food... reasonable prices.... I have spent considerable time there and never experienced crime or felt unsafe.... my work had me involved with research with New Mexico State University and I have been going to Las Cruces on a regular basis since 1987."

You decide!
