| Pinehurst is one of the cutest places on the planet. It is so subdued that you almost can't find it. Once there every house and building is adorable - kind of reminds me of Chatauqua Institution in western New York, or a small New England village - with pine straw on the ground. One affliction is a lot of very conservative, prosperous people wandering around in golf clothes. If you don't like a golf course atmosphere (and the sport is worshiped here) then stay away. Prices in the village reflect how nice it is. But if you like the area, the area is chock-a-block with nice towns and active adult developments with golf courses. Check out Southern Pines and Aberdeen, which is a real town with an actual bookstore. Homes and developments in these places will usually be cheaper, and you can still eat dinner at one of the fancy Pinehurst Village inns. |
