This is kind of a silly question. But is it advisable to drive to Lake Chapala from the U.S. or Canada? Do many people do it? You hear lots of things about banditos and such, but not having been there it is hard to know reality from fiction. Thanks. (obviously driving would be more convenient, we could take more stuff, even pets)
I don't specifically know about driving in Mexico (except that drivers are very aggressive). But as far as crime goes in Mexico there is a diversity of opinion. I love this quote I found on another Forum: "I lived in Mexico for the first 26 years of my life and never had a crime problem. There are cases everywhere. So it is more of a personal opinion and decision if people go or not." But other people mention high profile cases of tourists missing or murdered and they are alarmed. Several expressed caution about large cities, particularly Monterrey.
Maybe some one else could fill us in about the driving issue.

i asked around and some of the people familiar with Mexico said: what's the problem? They drive long distances without incident. THey recommend not driving at night, and being cautious about being "befriended" by people. With flying, they say, you will still end up having to rent a car. And lastly, they recommend the toll roads - expensive, but fast and safe.
