Cumberland County (Crossville is the county seat) on June 15, 2009 voted to authorize a company to utilize an area near Crossville as a dump site for coal combustion products. That is coal/fly ash that comes from the Kingston, TN coal ash problem. (do a search on "coal ash Kingston" and you will find it) The dumping authorized by the county is unlimited and could go on for decades. The dump site is about 15 miles from downtown Crossville and about 7 miles from the Fairfield Glade retirement community. It is possible the company will ask for authority to use other areas in Cumberland County as coal ash dump sites. Since the county has done it once, it is likely to happen again.
The county did it for money and gave little regard to the environmental/citizen impact. It was a solid vote for coal ash dumping -- 11 for and 6 against. As there is no zoning in Cumberland County, I would beware of looking at this place for retirement. I myself am leaving the area because of it.
