I have a ways to go before I retire, but taking a page from my parents' book, I think the worst thing you can do is age in the same big, inefficient house that you lived in when you were 50 and had teenagers around. Houses are A LOT of work, and the older they get the more of your hard earned time and money they suck up, just when your income is ebbing. My parents never went anywhere or did anything because their time and money were put into their "investment". Well, they can't possibly keep up with all the work, and they'll leave us with a house that still needs so much updating and work that it will go cheap anyway. I'm going to make sure I go into a much smaller condo or tiny house. I want a life after I retire!

A couple of other mistakes I have seen:
Suddenly having 2 active people in the house with no clear expectations/rules about how to deal with that. Particularly if one person was already working at home, the new person is invading their turf.

Another mistake is to underestimate how expensive health care coverage is going to be - particularly if you arent old enough for Medicare.

I think one mistake we made was retiring without a "plan". We're wading through choices and trying to figure it out as we go. Financially, we're ok,so at least that good, but trying to figure out where we want to live is mind boggling.
