I would love suggestions for towns or communities in the South where you can live well and not be car dependent. The one I know is Decatur, Georgia, where I lived for over 20 years, before I moved to Knoxville, TN, which is TOTALLY car dependent (and with no sidewalks.)

I love the idea of walking to restaurants, to the library, to the bank and grocery store, to the post office--you see what I mean. I love the climate in Knoxville but find I am driving all the time.

Your ideas are welcome!

Try looking into Greenville South Carolina. I was there for a day only but my husband was working there for 2 months and it is a beautiful, walkable town. Picture perfect downtown with shops, excellent restaurants, and bookstores as well as venues for the arts. We are from southern California and were very impressed with this small town. Check it out!!

This website lists walkable, new urbanism communities: http://www.tndtownpaper.com/neighborhoods.htm

If you find a place (say on the Internet) that looks promising, you can check out its walkability through www.walkscore.com
