| What ANCHORAGE is like for active adults |
Anchorage is by far the largest city in Alaska with a population over 250,000. Unlike almost any other city or town in Alaska, roads radiate out from Anchorage to nearby communities including the beatiful Kenai Peninsula. Anchorage is close to astounding scenery and outdoor recreation, yet is also a college town (University of Alaska-Anchorage, and Alaska Pacific University). The downtown is attractive and there are many nice parks throughout the city. It is wild enough that bear and attacks have occured within the city limits.
Although Alaska has almost no taxes, in fact it pays you to live here, it remains very expensive. Average home prices are about $260,000 in 2008. For most people, the short summers with long periods of daylight are much preferable to the cold and dark winters. |

| What is not special about this community |
| In Alaska winters are long and dark. Everything is very expensive. And unless you a free spirit, the stubborn independence of many of the locals could get on your nerves. |
