What Southbury is like for active adults

Southbury is a small town of about 19,000 in western New Haven County. It is near Oxford and east of Brookfield. It is also within easy driving distance (about 15 miles) from the cultural lights of New Haven and Stamford. Southbury is comprised of rural countryside, suburban neighborhoods, and many historic districts.

It is also home to the largest retirement community in Connecticut, Heritage Village. This community has enough residents (4000) to tilt the average age in the town, which is about 46 years. The average selling price of a home in Southbury was about $338,000 in 2005; more recent data suggests the average price is in the high $200's.

What is special about this community
Heritage Village, the largest retirement community in Connecticut is a census designated community within Southbury. There are numerous historical districts within Town.  The Southbury Library is fairly large (32,000 sq. ft.) and well-stocked (92,000 volumes). It is close to New Haven and New York, as well as rural Connecticut.

The Shepaug Dam on the Housatonic River offers and eagle observation area. Southbury's old library became a senior center

Hospitals in New Haven, Derby, and Stamford are within 20 miles.

Transportation
New Haven offers Amtrak and Metro North service, as well as a convenient airport (unfortunately with very limited service).  Hartford's Bradley Airport is less than 1 hour away.
