Fernandina beach : Florida

What Fernandina Beach is like for active adults
Amelia Island is a 13.5 mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean and the northernmost point of eastern Florida. While Amelia Island Plantation is a private community and resort, Fernandina Beach is the biggest town on the island.  Fernandina Beach has a charming downtown with an artsy feel and many quiet neighborhoods featuring Victorian homes. While Fernandina Beach is old Florida, the Amelia Island Plantation is new Florida at its best. With at least 5 world class golf courses, million dollar homes and condos, and cutesy shops - the Plantation and Fernandina Beach offer perfect contrast to make retirement life interesting here. Another community on the island is American Beach, a historic district founded in 1935 to give blacks access to the beach in the then segregated South.

Amelia Island Plantation has luxury hotels (a Ritz-Carlton), condos, and beautiful private homes.  You can live on the water (if you can afford it), beside a golf course, or have a home set in the live oak-studded dunes just off the beach. The public beaches and nature preserves to the south are some of the finest in the world. It can occasionally get chilly in the winter, but usually warms up during the day.

Home prices vary depending on location - in the Plantation will generally be much more expensive than in Fernandina. Prices on the Plantation start at over $500,000 and go to almost $5 million. The average price in early 2009 in Fernandina was about $335,000 according to the Nassau County Board of Realtors, down quite a bit from 2006. There were 430 homes and 304 condos on the market in March, 2009.

What is not special about this retirement community
While Fernandina can be a bit funky, Amelia can strike some people as being stuffy. If you are not well off, you won't be able to live in Amelia.  If your plans are to find a warm place for January and February, this is not your best solution. It will occasionally get too chilly for golf and other activities.
