| What Merritt Island is like for active adults |
Merritt Island is a peaceful retirement community of 36,000 located on the so-called “Space Coast” of Florida’s east coast.
Nature gets top billing in Merritt Island. Its centerpiece is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, 22 square miles of wetlands and home to more than 300 species of birds. Merritt Island represents an alternative to living in the big city or in a very affluent community for active adults 55+. Atlantic beaches are nearby, as is historic Cocoa Village.
Retirees who live in Merritt Island find it is possible to live near the water or a national wildlife refuge. They can live in town or in one of the many gated communities in the town or surrounding area. This diverse city is warm in the winter.
The average selling price for an existing condominium in the Titusville/Melbourne area was $185,000 in June 2006. Real estate prices in this retirement community the area tend to be fairly high compared to some other coastal communities. A search in late 2007 on Yahoo Real Estate found 884 homes for sale on the MLS with a median price of $379,000. There were 946 homes in the real estate classifieds with a median price of $380,000
