Port saint lucie : Florida

What Port Saint Lucie is like for active adults
Port St. Lucie is one of the fastest growing retirement communities in the U.S. according to the 2005 Census Bureau. In 1970 it had about 300 inhabitants, in 1980 there were 15,000, and in 2008 the Census Bureau estimated a city population of over 154,000 (with 400,000 in the metropolitan area). Port St. Lucie Beach is located in St. Lucie County. Port Saint Lucie started as a development of the General Development Corporation and became a city on April 27, 1961. Today the city is home to New York Mets spring training and the St. Lucie Mets Florida State League team. Florida Atlantic University has its Treasure Coast campus here.

Port St. Lucie experienced three major hurricanes within 2 years: Hurricane Frances, Hurricane Jeanne and Hurricane Wilma. The affects of those storms were severe but residents are rebuilding. There are many miles of unspoiled beaches along the ocean, plus many waterways connected to the intercoastal. Located about halfway down the east coast of Florida, Port St. Lucie tends to be a bit more low-key than more famous communities to the south. The city has had to wrestle with the issue of overdevelopment, a big problem everywhere in Florida.

Active adults who live in Port St. Lucie find it is possible to live near the water – either the beach or the intercoastal. There are many apartment buildings that offer carefree retirement living and varying degrees of amenities. Or you can choose to live in one of the many gated communities in the town or surrounding area. Prices have fallen significantly since 2006-7 - median price in mid 2009 was about $120,000.
