What Thomasville is like for active adults
Thomasville, Georgia, the City of Roses, can be an interesting retirement community in  cotton plantation country. The surrounding countryside can be quite beautiful, although one cannot say that about all areas of town.  It does offer a reasonable cost of living. The active brick-paved downtown has been restored with live oaks draped in Spanish moss, magnolias, antebellum homes, and fragrant plantings. Some parts of the downtown are depressed however.  Thomasville (population 19,000 in 2006) has a long history as a winter haven for wealthy northerners. Bypassed for Florida in the last century, the surrounding area is now is now in a resurgence as new retirees have discovered that it offers an old world charm missing elsewhere. The area is very close to northern Florida and Tallahassee -  the road between the two is quite scenic along horse farms and pecan plantations.

What people are saying about Thomasville

There are parts of town
Agreed there are some parts of Thomasville that are a bit off-putting. Those areas are run down and gritty. While there are many areas, particularly out of town that are especially nice with horse farms and pecan plantations. Just be careful where you live.

We drove through here
My wife and I drove through Thomasville and we were very impressed. It is close to Tallahassee. The downtown looks nice and there are many active adult communities. My question is - i wonder what it is like for a person from the north to retire in a town like Thomasville? Will they find it comfortable, or strange. I mostly ask because if you come in from any direction but the south, you really get an old-time southern feel. Trashy gas stations, dumpy little houses, and a feeling of poverty and/or grittyness.
