| What Thomasville is like for active adults |
Thomasville, Georgia, the City of Roses, makes a picturesque retirement community in this historic cotton plantation country. It combines graceful beauty and a reasonable cost of living. The active brick-paved downtown has been beautifully restored with live oaks draped in Spanish moss, magnolias, antebellum homes, and fragrant plantings. Thomasville (population 19,000 in 2006) has a long history as a winter haven for wealthy northerners. Bypassed for Florida in the last century, the area is now is now in a resurgence as new retirees have discovered that it offers an old world charm missing elsewhere.
Active adults 55+ who choose Thomasville as their retirement community will find a great variety of housing options. You can live in a charming neighborhood – either in an historic home (more expensive) or in a smaller but newer home. There are condominiums and apartments to choose from. Many active adult and over 55 developments are going up. According to City-Data.com the average home price in Thomasville was about $184,000 in mid 2008.
There are some surrounding towns that are also worth investigating, as they are beginning to be developed for the active adult market. The road to Tallahassee (33 miles) has many of them, as do the towns of Quitman and Valdosta that lie to the east. |
