Orono, a college town, is the home of the University of Maine in Penobscot County, Maine. The population is just over 9,000 but swells by additional thousands when college is in session. This college town is partially surrounded by two rivers, the Penobscot and the Stillwater. Orono is on Rt I95 in central Maine, just north of Bangor.
You can live in this college town or in an active adult community (see link at right). The median price of a home was at about $190,000 in Q2 of 2012, according to City-Data.
Orono is pretty far up, north or Bar Harbor in the interior. The average July high is 80, the average Jan. high is 28, and the average Jan. low is 8. September gets the most precipitation, 4".
Living in a college town can be very stimulating. The Fay Hyland Botanical Plantation and the Lyle Littlefield Ornamental Trials Garden are local attractions. There is a public library.
