What Holland is like for active adults
Holland, Michigan owes its heritage to its Dutch settlers. With its own tulip festival and distinctive Dutch architecture, this popular retirement community could be confused with a charming town in the Netherlands. Its location on the shores of Lake Macatawa provides plenty of summer fun for active aduls 55+ at the beach or on a boat. The Victorian-styled downtown with 85 unique shops is one reason why Holland was selected by Money magazine as the #4 best place to retire in America. The area bustles with thriving shops and restaurants.

Active adults come to Holland (34,000 people) for its charm, recreational activities, and plentiful and relatively inexpensive housing opportunities. Tourists come too, over 2.5 million per year, drawn to its festivals, ample green spaces, and lake-side setting. Hope College is a small private school that adds culture and youth to the community. The Herrick District Library is exceptionally well-funded and offers more than 217,000 volumes.

Real estate here is one of the best bargains in the country. According to Yahoo Real Estate the MLS median asking price of 1,287 homes offered for sale in late 2006 was $159,900. There were 141 homes listed in real estate classifieds with a median price of $169,900.
