Hertford : North carolina

What Hertford is like for active adults
Hertford is a small town located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. The population was 2,185 at the 2008 census.  Hertford is the county  seat of Perquiman county. This town in northeastern NC tretches from the Albemarle Sound to the Great Dismal Swamp, Perquimans means "Land of Beautiful Women."  Formerly a lumber center, agriculture is now the main industry.

There are some active adult communities in the area (see link at top right). It is hard to be accurate about median home prices in a town like Hertford because the area combines high-end waterfront active adult communities with low-end housing by some of the lower income locals. City-Data, for example, reports the median home price to be about $700,000 in mid 2009, although the median household income in the area is only $24,000. Average home value was just over $100,000 in 2007. Photo above courtesy of NASA.
