What Fairborn is like for active adults
Fairborn is a quiet town with many working at the nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the home of the Air Force Materiel Command and in many measures the largest, most diverse and organizationally complex base in the Air Force.

Due to the close proximate of WPAFB, Fairborn attracts military retirees from all over the country, many of whom were stationed at Wright Patt at some pint in their careers.

Fairborn has a rich history and was formed from the union of the two villages of Fairfield and Osborn. Fairfield was originally founded in 1816 and Osborn in 1851. The construction of the Huffman Dam on the Mad River following the Dayton Flood of 1913 put Osborn directly in a flood plain. In 1921 the village decided to move homes out of the flood plain on flatbed trucks and settle alongside Fairfield. Growth of the two villages was hindered by the other's borders, a military flying field where the Wright Brothers perfected flight and a depot (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). The two villages voted to merge in 1949 and officially merged in 1950.

Home to Wright State University and within minutes of the University of Dayton, Sinclair Community College, Clark State, Antioch University and The Air Force Institute of Technology, retirees in this area will find plenty of continuing education possibilities. Downtown Fairborn features many shops restaurants, banks and a branch of the Greene County Public library.

With a population of 32,052, Fairborn offers the accessibility and friendly atmosphere of a small town. At the same time, it provides residents and visitors an array of cultural, artistic and historical attractions normally associated with much larger cities. In addition to numerous yearly festivals and celebrations, Fairborn offers access to various exhibitions and performances on the campus of Wright State. The Nutter Center offers performances by national-caliber entertainers and sports.
