| What Lufkin is like for active adults |
Lufkin, Texas has been selected as one of the first to receive “Texas Certified Retirement Community Certification”. Town officials, which pursued this certification as an innovative form of economic development, viewed the honor "as a verification of Lufkin's quality of life". Nacogdoches County - located 18 miles north of Lufkin - was also honored as one of the first three certified communities. The two communities are part of Texas Forest Country, known as one of the most attractive areas of the southern United States.
Lufkin was selected as an all-American City in 2003 and routinely surfaces as an affordable place for active adults 55+ to live. Located near the southeastern tip of Texas, it has a warm climate. There is a strong economic base, many restaurants, and at least 3 private retirement communities for active adults in or near the town. | Two major hospitals, Memorial Health System of East Texas and Woodland Heights Medical Center, provide an array of medical facilities, including those for cancer diagnosis and treatments, cardiac care, kidney disease, diabetes treatment, and physical rehabilitation. More than 156 physicians practice in Lufkin. The Lufkin State School is another health care facility. |

| A modern airport, Angelina County Airport, named as Texas' Airport of the Year in 1996, is located beside Highway 59 between Lufkin and Diboll.
