What Roanoke is like for active adults

Roanoke is a city of just under 100,000 in southwestern Virginia. It is the hub of that part of the state, as well as for southern West Virginia. Although the city itself is not growing, the metro area is, thanks to many retirees moving to the area.  Roanoke has long had a very aggressive urban renewal focus that has brought renewed life to the traditional downtown. There are many cultural events, museums and festivals that bring people to the center of town. In 2013 The Huffington Post listed Roanoke as the #2 Most Affordable City to retire, citing its low sales (4%) and income (2-5.75%) taxes, plus lower than average cost of living.
