| Jackson Hole is the name of one of the most gorgeous valleys on the planet. Surrounded by the jagged mountains of the Grand Tetons National Forest, the area offers unparalleled recreational and scenic opportunities as a retirement community.
The Rockefeller Family was instrumental in saving this beautiful area from overdevelopment. Prices tend to be quite expensive because there is a limited supply of privately available land. Almost any home or condo has a spectacular view of the mountains. The ski resort is located in the very small town of Teton Village, where ski-in ski-out condo prices can easily exceed $1 million.
Most people tend to think of Jackson as a winter retreat. Adventurous skiers come from around the for the Jackson Hole Ski Resort’s challenging ski runs. The cross country skiing is excellent. The summer season that is the most popular. People come for the hiking, outdoor sports, wildlife, and the beauty of its terrain. A herd of 10,000 elk lives in the area. Many active adults come here for one season, living full-time somewhere else.
Nature gets top billing in Jackson Hole, elevation 6500’. The town of Jackson, a few miles away from the Jackson Hole Resort, is a charming western town of 9,000 people. It has had a dramatic resurgence in recent years. Interesting shops and restaurants, plus a public square (don’t miss its entrance sculpture of hundreds of elk antlers) make it a popular tourist destination. The Silver Dollar Bar in the legendary Wort Hotel is also always worth a visit, with its bar inlaid with 2032 silver dollars.
Jackson real estate is pricey. Condos in town tend to start in the $200,000’s, with private homes commonly selling for $1 million and much more. A search on Yahoo Real Estate for the Town of Jackson found 16 homes in the classifieds with a median asking price of $1 million. There are a few mobile home parks in the area that offer more economical living. Surrounding towns llike Wilson are less expensive. |
