What it's Like to Retire in Eufaula

Eufaula, Alabama was founded as a center of trade due to its presence on the Chattahoochee River and its rich soil. Prior to the civil war it was the major shipping and commercial center of the region. The legacy of that period is its 700 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including its classic Carnegie Library with colonial balcony. Many of these are beautiful historic homes in the ante-bellum and Victorian styles.

Nearest cities to Eufaula (about 50 miles) are Dothan, AL and Columbus, GA. The town is located in Barbour County, and has just under 15,000 residents.

Where to Retire in Eufaula and Home Prices

Eufaula is a beautiful place to retire. Most active adults who move here live in a restored historic house.
Housing tends to be inexpensive. Alabama's tax structure is very favorable to retirees, who are being courted by the state. Property taxes on a $200,000 will  be less than $2000 per year. There are  also some homestead exemptions and other tax breaks for seniors. Eufaual is so small that reliable housing prices are hard to find, but prices will vary by neighborhood and type of house.  Zillow.com reported the median liest price was about $179,000 in early 2015.
