What it's Like to Retire in Kingman

Most of the towns that people know about in Arizona are either in the Phoenix, Tucson, or northern areas of Arizona. Kingman, however, is located in the northwestern part of the state, close to California. This town near I 40 and Route 66 of 28,000 grew 37% between 2000 and 2008. There is a community college in town, Mohave Community College. Outdoor sports like hiking are very popular in the nearby mountains. Where to Retire in Kingman and Home Prices

You can live in or near town or in one of the active adult communities in the area (see link at right).
City-Data reported the median sale price to be about $130,000 at the end of 2014, and reported the average sales price to be similar at $134,875 in mid 2015.


What is special about Kingman

Hualapai Mountain Park is reported to be a great place to hike.  Kingman was the home of the actor Andy Devine. Now there is an Andy Devine Avenue, as well as the annual Andy Devine Days. Famous Route 66 runs through town.

What is not special about Kingman

Criticism of Kingman usually centers around its isolation and distance from other cities.  Healthcare is hard to find, particularly mental health care, according to some posters.  It is not a great place for culture. Others say that the area is terribly windy in the winter and spring. It is in the desert and unusually dry.

Who will like retirement in Kingman

People who like the outdoors and hiking and biking might like Kingman. It is not for culture buffs.

Local economy is driven by

Tourism, natural resources, and agriculture. Kingman is the county seat of Mohave County.

Climate and Physical Environment

Kingman is in the desert in northwest Arizona near the California and Nevada borders. The average July high is 96. The average Jan. high is 54 and the low is 31. The wettest month is August (1.4").  It can and does snow in winter.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

There are some festivals such as Andy Devine days, an annual car show, and first Friday of the month art gallery openings. Mohave Community College is a cultural resource. See also the Route 66 Museum, Beale Street Antique Row (14 antique stores).


Crime in Kingman is about twenty five percent higher than the national average.

Medical facilities

Kingman Medical Center supports Kingman's medical needs.


Interstate 40 and Route 66 come through Kingman. Amtrak has a stop here, and there is a municipal airport with air taxi service.
