What it's Like to Retire in Apple Valley

Apple Valley is a town of about 69,000 that is northeast of San Bernardino and near Victorville. Its big claim to fame is that is was the home of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. It is ranchland and also a far-flung suburb to the LA area.  Apples were once grown here but due to water shortages long ago disappeared. Arrowhead and Lake Arrowhead provide great recreational opportunities here.

 

Where to Retire in Apple Valley and Home Prices

There are active adult communities in the area (see link at right or our California Directory under "Find a Community".) The median selling price of a home was about $170,000 in late 2014, according to City-Data.com, certainly a bargain for California.

 

What is special about Apple Valley

Former home to the TV and movie cowboy starts Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.  Plenty of inexpensive land. Lake Arrowhead and the Lake Arrowhead Resort. The Apple Valley Golf Course.

 

What is not special about Apple Valley

It is dry and not convenient to the coast or LA.

Retirees who like a mild climate most of the year would enjoy Apple Valley.

Apple Valley is east of Los Angeles and north of San Bernardino along the Mohave River. Average winter temperatures are in the 40s and about 80 in July.

 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Concerts in the Courtyard. Victor Valley College is in nearby Victorville.

 

Crime

The crime rate is lower than the national average.

 

Medical facilities

St. Marys Medical Center provides acute care services. There are nearby hospitals in Victorville and San Bernadino.

 

Transportation

Apple Valley has a small airport and the nearest international airport is in Ontario, CA about 50 miles away.
