What it's Like to Retire in Danbury

Danbury is a small city in western Connecticut of about 81,000. It was formerly called the Hat City because it was a center of hat manufacturing.  There is a very large mall in town now on a former industrial site. This part of northwestern Connecticut on Candlewood Lake and near the Hudson River is very beautiful.


Where to Retire in Danbury and Home Prices

There are active adult communities in the area (see link at right).  According to City-Data.com, the median sale price in late 2014 was about $265,000.  Zillow reports it to be close to that at $270, 000 in mid-2015. 


What is special about Danbury

Danbury is in a beautiful area of CT.  The city's Main Street Historical District has been revitalized (photo above courtesy of Wikipedia and Daniel Case). It has one of the finest public golf courses in the nation, Richter Park.  Crime is low. Easy access to NYC. Candlewood Lake and Candlewood Park are just some of the many parks in the city.

Danbury is home to the Danbury Federal Correctional Institute, now a women's prison.

People looking for  a small city near the country but also within striking distance of New York City might like it here.


Local economy is driven by

In addition to the hospital, school district, and Western Conn State Univ. there are also several sizable corporations headquartered here, such as Boerhinger Ingleheim and Ethan Alllen.


Climate and Physical Environment

Danbury is on CT's western border in the southern portion of the state. December average temp is in the high 20s and the July average is about 70.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

There ia a good library in town and several museums such as the Danbury Railway Museum, as well as Western Conn. State Univ.



The crime rate is half the national average.


Medical facilities

Danbury Hospital serves the community.



There is a municipal airport. Danbury is the terminus of the Danbury line of the MTA railroad. I84 and Rte 7 are the major roads that cross here.
