What it's Like to Retire in Coconut Creek

Coconut Creek is a suburban town in South Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale and Margate and west of Pompano Beach. The population was 56,792 in 2013.  The city is known for its good planning and many parks and waterways. Coconut Creek is the first in the state of Florida and eleventh in the country to be certified as a "Community Wildlife Habitat".  Broward College is located here. The city's housing consists of single family homes, condominiums, and townhouses - many of which are in developments. There is at least one very large active adult community in Coconut Creek (see link at top right). Median home price was about $132,500 in early 2016, according to Zillow.

 

What is special about Coconut Creek

Coconut Creek is called the Butterfly Capital of the World.  The world's largest butterfly aviary, Butterfly World, with over 80 species and 5,000 individual butterflies, is located in Coconut Creek.
 

What is not special about Coconut Creek

There is urban sprawl and a fair amount of traffic. Summers are hot and humid.
 

Who will like retirement in Coconut Creek

Retirees who want a town that has a lot parks, a community bus, a large shopping mall and a casino may enjoy retiring here.

Coconut Creek is home to Butterfly World, the largest butterfly house in the U.S.  The town also has 18 parks and green spaces, a large shopping and dining complex, and is home to the Seminole Casino.

 

Crime

The crime rate is about 2/3 the national average.
 

Medical facilities

Northwest Regional Hospital is located in nearby Margate.

 

Transportation

There is an Amtrak station about 5 miles away in Deerfield Beach.  The nearest airport is in Fort Laurderdale, about 20 miles from Coconut Creek.
