What it's Like to Retire in DeLand

DeLand is a small town just west of Daytona Beach in North Florida.  It is the home of Stetson University, named after its early benefactor, the founder of the famous hat company. Stetson Univ. was the first private college in Florida. The campus is part of a National Historic District. Although the population is about 28,000 it is part of the Daytona metro which has a large population. It is the county seat of Volusia County.

DeLand is justly proud of the lovely downtown area with its distinctive Mediterranean archictecture.  Woodland Boulevard has won Florida's Best Main Street award numerous times. The Downtown DeLand Historic District is a mixed-use neighborhood. A second area called the Garden District is also being developed.  DeLand is also home to many growing companies and is diversified economically. Where to Retire in DeLand and Home Prices

There is a very large active adult community in De Land (see link at top right).
Median selling home prices in early 2013 in Deland were $80,000 according to City-Data.com. However Zillow.com reports a much higher median sale price of $120,400 in mid 2013.

 

What is special about DeLand

Downtown Deland Historic District. Garden District, a new redevelopment project that is currently underway.  Strong economic base. Stetson University.  Near the beaches of Daytona Beach
 

What is not special about DeLand

Real estate in this part of Florida have been pummeled, which is either a negative or a positive.  City-Data.com reports a very high crime rate for DeLand, although other services have it about average.
 

Who will like retirement in DeLand

Retirees who want to live in a college town, like a small town yet close to a larger city, and not far from the beach.

Climate and Physical Environment

DeLand is in northern Florida about 11 miles west of Daytona Beach. It has a sub-tropical climate which is mild in winter and hot and rainy in winter.
 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

For culture DeLand has many offerings. Stetson University has theatre productions as well as classes aimed at older residents. The DeLand Arts Festival from the Museum of the Florida Arts is a very successful annual affair. The Volusia County Library has a lovely building and many programs. The local Sanborn Activities Center also has a lot going on of interest.
 

Crime

Crime in DeLand is incredibly high according to City-Data.com - nearly three times the national average. Other sources such as cityrating.com also report much higher average crime rates for property crime and violent crime.
 

Medical facilities

Florida Hospital DeLand serves DeLand. Other hospitals are a short drive away in Orlando, Sanford, and Daytona Beach
 

Transportation

DeLand transportation options include airports in Daytona Beach, Orlando/Sanford, and Orlando, all of which are within 45 miles. AMTRAK has a station in DeLand
