What it's Like to Retire in Islamorada

Islamorada is one of the largest towns in the Florida Keys that run from Miami to Key West.  This beautiful town is on  a group of islands barely above sea level about midway down the Keys.  There are 2 Islamorada's - Islamorada and Islamorada Village of Islands. This is a very water-centric community - almost everyone is a fisherman, boater, or beach lover.  Islamorada sports some of the best and most prolific fishing in the world - Grouper, Yellowtail Snapper, and Tarpon abound. Big game fishing is a short boat ride away.  Average age in Islamorada is about 45, about 6 years higher than Florida average, reflecting its popularity as a retirement community.

Where to Retire in Islamorada and Home Prices

There are  many different neighborhoods on various keys to choose from - most of which are on or near the water.
Average real estate prices are high, hitting almost $600,000 in 2007 before settling back to earth. Like in most of Florida, prices are off. In late 2014 City-Data reported the median selling price to be just under $350,000. However Zillow reports the median home value in late 2015, was $659,000. These prices can be deceptive and are skewed by many homes selling for millions of dollars - yet more modest dwellings do exist.
