Islamorada : Florida

What Islamorada is like for active adults
Islamorada is one of the largest towns in the Florida Keys that run from Miami to Key West.  This beautiful town is on  a group of islands barely above sea level about midway down the Keys.  There are 2 Islamorada's - Islamorada and Islamorada Village of Islands. This is a very water-centric community - almost everyone is a fisherman, boater, or beach lover.  Islamorada sports some of the best and most prolific fishing in the world - Grouper, Yellowtail Snapper, and Tarpon abound. Big game fishing is a short boat ride away. Islamorada is one of the most affluent of the Keys, nearby Tavernier and Marathon are not as pricey.

Average age in Islamorada is about 45, about 6 years higher than Florida average, reflecting its popularity as a retirement community.  Average real estate prices are high, hitting almost $600,000 in 2007 before settling back to earth.  These prices can be deceptive and are skewed by many homes selling for millions of dollars - yet more modest dwellings do exist.

What is not special about this retirement community
It's very expensive. It is very small and insular. When hurricanes come (and they do) you must evacuate up a long and slow highway.
