What it's Like to Retire in Cambridge

Cambridge, Maryland, is a historic waterfront community and is the county seat of Dorchester County.  It is one of the oldest colonial cities in Maryland and named after the English colonist who settled it in 1684.  The city, located on the Chesapeake peninsula on Maryland's Eastern Shore, had a population of just over 12,000 at the 2010 census.  Picture of Cambridge Municipal Building courtesy of Wikipedia and Eli Pousson.


Where to Retire in Cambridge and Home Prices

The housing prices in Cambridge continued to rise during 2013 to about $160,000, but then settled in at about $150,000 during the 4th quarter of 2013.  The Zillow Home Value Index was $130,000 in early 2014. As with most waterfront communitiies, it's all about location and prices can be much higher closer to the water.


What is special about Cambridge

Cambridge is a waterfront community with a lot of colonial heritage and maritme tradition, with a downtown that offers a variety of shops, cafes, and galleries.  The town is not far from large cities such as Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. The 400-room Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay resort, which includes a golf course, spa, and marina is a popular new addition to the town.


What is not special about Cambridge

Cambridge  is a former commercial town  that relied on food processing for the local economy. A lot of that business went away leaving Cambridge struggling for many years. It is cool during the winter months with an average January temperature under 40 degrees; the crime rate is above the national average; the nearest large ariport is about 75 miles away.


Who will like retirement in Cambridge

Those who would enjoy living near the water in a town that is considered a walkable community, and has a lower than average cost of living would enjoy retiring here.

Climate and Physical Environment

The average January temperature in Cambridge is 38 degrees and the average July temperature is 79 degrees.  It does snow in Cambridge and averages about twelve inches each winter.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Cambridge has Historical High Street with costumed guides for the walking tour.  It also has several museums which includes the Brannock Richardson Maritime Museum, and a park with boat docks, fishing piers, and playgrounds.  May through December there are many community events including festivals and a regatta.



The crime rate is higher than the national average.

Amtrak offers bus service; the nearest international airport is 73 miles away in Baltimore; there is a regional airport 40 miles away in Salisbury.
