Saint Paul, located along the banks of the Mississippi River, is the capital of Minnesota, although it is the smaller of its Twin City, Minneapolis. Together the two form one large metropolitan area with about 3.5 million residents. St. Paul has a colorful history, and is home to more than 100 landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cathedral of Saint Paul, modeled after St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in Rome, is one of the most elaborate in the country. During the Prohibition-era, the city was known as a haven for notorious gangsters like John Dillinger and Babyface Nelson, and tours are offered of their famous hangouts. Saint Paul is a college town and is home to several colleges and universities which include Saint Catherine University, and Concordia University.
