Freehold is a township of about 31,000 people in New Jersey.  Freehold Borough is the town in the center of the Township, childhood home to Bruce Springsteen. The Battle of Monmouth was fought in what has been preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park, which is in Freehold Township. What is special about Freehold

Freehold is diverse as it  offers a historical setting with Main Street made up of many old buildings built in the 1800's along with Victorian homes, but  it is also home to Freehold Raceway and a large shopping mall.  Day trips can be taken to NYC and Philadelphia.  

 

What is not special about Freehold

High cost of living, winter, not considered a walkable community. On the Topretirements 2014 list of the Worst States for Retirement New Jersey was at the top of the list.

 

Who will like retirement in Freehold

Those who would like to retire to a town rich in history with museums, festivals, parks, and outdoor activities for all four seasons would enjoy Freehold.

Climate and Physical Environment

The average January temperature is 30 degrees and the average July temperature is 74 degrees. The average winter snowfall is about 25 inches.

 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Freehold is a historical town with a past that is rich in American Revoulion History.  Monmouth Battlefield, where one of the largest battles took place, is now a preserved State Park for hiking, horseback riding or picnicing. Many of the buildings in town date back to the 1800's.  The oldest building is St. Peter's Episcopal Church built in 1683. The Freehold Township Heritage Society helps to preserve and promote the town's historical past, and sponsers two annual festivals with Civil War re-enactors,  farmhouse tours, and weaving, and wool spinning demonstrations. 

Freehold is also home to Freehold Raceway, the nation's first harness racing track, which was opened in 1853 and still operates today.  The town also offers dining, antique galleries and a large mall. 

 

Crime

Freehold has a low crime rate.

CentraState Medical Center 

 

Transportation

Bus service is provided to NYC, Trenton, Newark and Philadelphia daily as there are many Freehold residents who are commuters. The closest airport is in Newark, about 35 miles away.
