| What Granite Falls is like for active adults |
Granite Falls is a very small town of about 4600 people in the west central foothills of North Carolina. Hickory is the largest nearby town, along with Lenoir. The elevation is about 1100' above sea level. The area is rural and hilly - popular with vacationers and retirees. The climate is a bit milder than in the rest of North Carolina. This part of western North Carolina, which includes the retirement magnets of Asheville and Charlotte, has become extremely popular for retirees and developers of active adult communities. Charlotte is 53 miles away, Asheville is a bit further to the west.
Granite Falls has had its ups and downs. There is not much in the way of local shopping or restaurants. Wal-Mart has a very large store in town. Lakeside Park along Lake Rhodhiss will soon provide a major recreational outlet for the town. There is boating and golf nearby. |
