| What Greenville is like for active adults |
Greenville is a growing residential community of 75,000 located in Pitt County in the eastern part of North Carolina. Many active adults choose this as their retirement community because of it proximity to Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks, its mild weather, and an economical life style. The community is a young one, the average age is 26. Many people in retirement tend to live in developments that are either designed for adults 55+, although many general developments located on the water and/or golf courses are popular. Greenville is in Pitt County. East Carolina University and its 26,000 students make Greenville a college town.
The town was recognized as "Sportstown USA" by Sports Illustrated and the National Parks and Recreation Association. The recognition came for its commitment to providing sporting opportunities for residents. Thanks to its numerous sports facilities Greenville has hosted many important events such as the Girls Softball Babe Ruth World Series, the Beast of the East Soccer Tournament, and the North Carolina State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. The North Carolina Senior Games and the Eastern Regional High School Basketball tournament are held here annually.
Pitt County has over twenty parks with hundreds of acres of hiking, fishing and boating. Water sports are popular on the Tar River and four lakes in the area. Golf is popular with 6 different courses to choose from, including Ironwood Golf Course.
Real estate prices in the area tend to be relatively low. The average selling price in early 2009 was about $140,000.
