Retirees from the US and Canada have long found the Coronado Beach area a popular place to retire. There is a vibrant social scene for these expats, as well as a variety of developments, often condominiums, for them to live in. The "pensionado" program is attractive because it provides visas and discounts to retirees who move here. The Pan American Highway, which opened in the 1990s, along with a soon to be completed new airport, Scarlett Martinez International Airport at RIo Hato, make getting here much easier than it used to be. A smaller neighboring beach town, Farallon, is also attracting development and expats. Panama is also attractive because it is considered friendly to the US and even uses the US $ as its currency.
