The largest city in Portugal and one of the oldest cities in the world, Lisbon is a diverse global city home to a population of about 3,000,000 within the metropolitan area. It is the westernmost European capital city, and one of the only along the Atlantic coast. The Lisbon region is the wealthiest in Portugal. It is the host of many international conferences, a corporate center of Europe, and a political powerhouse. Lisbon is an architectural dreamscape filled with many different neighborhoods to explore.

What is special about Lisbon

Lisbon is an incredibly historical but modern city on the coast that offers a wide array of activity year-round for active retirees. It has long-held traditions in sports (particularly soccer and pro-surfing), music, food (particularly seafood), and is easily reached by Europe's major areas. It's also one of the safest cities in Europe.

Lisbon, as one of the most visited cities in western Europe, gets extremely touristy, particularly in the summer.

According to Global Peace Index ratings, Lisbon is the 16th most peaceful country in the world. Within the city center, petty tourist-related crimes are common, but violent crime is not extreme.
