What it's Like to Retire in Missouri City

Missouri City is a very fast growing suburb of Houston, Texas.  It has a long been a haven for middle class African-Americans, who started moving here in the 1970s. Where to Retire in Missouri City and Home Prices

Master planned communities include Lake Olympia and Sienna Plantation. There are active adult communities in the area.

Median home price in early 2013 was about $190,000 according to City-Data.com. As in much of Texas (a no income tax state) property taxes are high (averaging about $4200).


What is special about Missouri City

Missouri City was named a model city for middle class African-Americans by Black Entertainment Television. It is a very affluent town with median HH income over $80,000 and a number of interesting developments. Crime is very low.

What is not special about Missouri City

It gets hot and humid in the summer.

Who will like retirement in Missouri City

Middle class African Americans will feel very comfortable in Missouri City, as will others looking for diversity. The population is about 40% black with the remainder fairly evenly split among whites, Asians, and Hispanics.  Folks who want to live in a large suburb with a diverse group of neighborhoods, and live close to the city of Houston, might like it here.

Climate and Physical Environment

Missouri City is very close to Houston in south Texas. The average July high temperature is 94 and the average January low is 42. The wettest month is September (6")


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Missouri City is served by the Missouri City Branch of the Fort Bend County Libraries system. There is a community college system. It is close to Houston's array of cultural opportunities.



The crime rate is about half the national average.

Medical facilities

Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Hospital serves Missouri City.  There are additional hospitals close by in Sugarland and Houston.


Amtrak is 17 miles away in Houston. Missouri City is below average in walkability when compared to other communities.
