Taxes Taxes in nc are generally lower than in Northeast states. The North Carolina top marginal income tax rate is one of the higher rates (a range of 6.0-8.25%). Sales tax is 4.5%. Total tax burden is about average. There are some income tax exemptions for pensions, particularly for those with careers in the public sector and for most military pensions.
