We retired and moved to Oak Island, NC in September 2018 one week after Hurricane Florence struck this area. What a way to start our retirement living! However, we were pleasantly surprised to find most of the Island in good shape albeit lots of coastal flooding due to 30 inches of rain over a couple days. Shingles and siding did suffer on a lot of homes but structures in general were still intact. Oak Island escaped the feared CAT 4 winds and instead were subjected to barely CAT 1 wind effects. We had a new home built and had zero flood or building damage.

So we are now a half year in to coastal living and we love it. Oak Island is not subjected to crazy traffic and heavy tourism. It is a quiet community that has three times as many ice cream parlors as traffic lights which really is a great way to describe this place. We can walk to the beach one way, or the intercoastal waterway the other way everyday. Bicyling is popular too as it is a flat terrain with lightly populated streets. The restaurants have been a hit with us as we have yet to have a bad meal and almost all the restaurants are local businesses, not chains. Of course seafood is the most popular choice when dining out because everything is fresh catch of the day. The mainstays of the Island are its fishing and boating opportunities, along with beach activities.

Building is booming as well with many new homes going up and a second grocery store (Publix) now being built on the Island. This Island has two ways to get on and off which is definitely attractive during everyday travel or in crisis during Hurricane threats, etc. It is next door to historic Southport with all of its charm and quaint shops and great restaurants on the mouth of the Cape Fear River where it meets the ocean.

I think the last Top Retirement article on Oak Island, NC was written in 2016 and its information needs updating, especially about crime (not much) and average temperatures for this region (July average high is 85, not 78 as indicated). Crime is not above the average but instead in the middle or lower than the average across the nation. Finally, the average home cost is around 240k, not 197K. Hopefully Top Retirement will update this information for the consumers who may believe otherwise.

Drawbacks is that if you are looking for high excitement, waterparks, amusement parks, etc., you will not find them here. A trip to Myrtle Beach which is an hour south would be needed to meet those demands. This is a quiet Island that expands from 8,000 permanent residents to 50,000 including tourists in the summer months.

Hope this summary is helpful to those wondering about what it is like to live on Oak Island, NC.

George

Thank you George for your comments on living in Oak Island, we appreciate hearing from residents who can give us a better picture of the community. I did update the research on Oak Island and made changes where needed as you suggested, in real estate and climate.
