Acapulco is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Guerrero, and is a major seaport for shipping and cruise lines. Acapulco is also Mexico’s largest beach and resort city, and became very popular with the rich and famous during the 1950’s. During the next several decades it grew with many new resorts and expansion of the port. In the 2000s, the drug war in Mexico has had a negative effect on tourism inAcapulco, and gang violence continued to plague the city. Since then, Acapulco has become safer with the government stepping up its fight against crime, but Cancun and La Paz have become the more popular Mexican destinations. The population of the city of Acapulco is over 600,000, and is the largest city in the state.
