What it's Like to Retire in Polson

Polson is a resort town on Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana, north of Missoula. Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the western U.S. The population was 4,497 in 2011. It is on the Flathead Indian Reservation. This charming lakeshore community is the center of one of most fertile farming areas in Montana. Where to Retire in Polson and Home Prices

There is a resort where some retirees live at least part of the year (see Active Communities link at right).  According to City-data.com, the median sale price of a home has risen to be about $250,000 in early 2014, which is much higher than the previous year.


What is special about Polson

The lake and the recreational opportunities are excellent.

What is not special about Polson

Community is small and about a one hour drive to  nearest city.


Who will like retirement in Polson

If you move to Montana you have to like the wide open spaces and feel a bit remote from large cities.

Tourism, accomodations and food service, education, health care


Climate and Physical Environment

The median January temperature is in the mid 20's.  Polson is in the northwestern part of the State near Idaho. It is surrounded by National Forests.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Nearby Missoula is the best bet for local cultural opportunities.


The crime rate is higher than the national average.

Medical facilities

St. Joseph Medical Center provides emergency services. There are some nearby hospitals including one in Kalispell 37 miles away.


Missoula airport is sixty-five miles away.  Polson is a very walkable community.
