What it's Like to Retire in Monroe Township

Monroe Township is an area in central NJ's Middlesex County with several small towns including Clearbrook Park, Monroe, Yorketown, Englishtown, Helmetta, and Jamesburg. The town has a respected Blue Ribbon school district, recreational opportunities for everyone, and a highly active senior. The population was 27,000 in the 2010 census. There is farmland, streams, and dense woodlands, often referred to as the pine barrens.

 

Where to Retire in Monroe Township and Home Prices

Monroe Township has one of the greatest concentrations of active adult communities in the country. Many of these are clustered near the NJ Turnpike. We know of at least 10 such communities, along with developments aimed at all age groups. (See link for several Monroe Active Communities at top right). Others include Concordia, Encore, Greenbriar, Stonebridge, Renaissance at Monroe, and Waterside Mature Apartments.

Real Estate Prices
It is difficult to get an up to date picture of real estate prices in Monroe Township. Depending on the development there can be quite a range. Zillow.com reports the median home value to be $363,200 in late 2016.

 

What is special about Monroe Township

The Township has  a very high concentration of active adult communities. Its Office of Aging has a number of active programs to engage the minds and bodies of the Township's seniors.
 

What is not special about Monroe Township

Its in the interior of  New Jersey, the average age is around 60.

Climate and Physical Environment

Monroe Township is in Middlesex County in the center of the state.  The average July high temperature is 85 and the average January high is 38 (the average low is 21). The wettest month is July (5").
 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Monroe has what is described as a state of the art library. There are also many programs for seniors and a senior center.
 

Crime

Monroe Township has a very low crime rate.

 

Medical facilities

For non-routine medical issues you would probably go to East Brunswick.
 

Transportation

I 95, the NJ Turnpike runs through the township.  Newark Airport is the closest, but Philadelphia is relatively close.  AMTRAK is not far.
