| What Claremont is like for active adults |
Claremont California, the City of Trees and PhD.'s, is located some 30 miles east of Los Angeles. It is home to the Claremont Colleges. This consortium consists of seven schools including Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Keck Graduate Institute, and Claremont Graduate University. Approximately 5,000 students attend these elite colleges.
Aside from the colleges, Claremont is admired for its tree-lined streets and historic buildings. Money magazine rated it in 2007 as the fifth best place to live in the U.S. (the highest rated place in California). The town is primarily residential. Commercial activity centers around The Village, a popular area of street-front small stores, boutiques, art galleries, offices, and restaurants. The Village is near the Claremont Colleges. A new multi-use development including a cinema, boutique hotel, retail space, etc. is due to be added in 2007.
Retirement communities include Pilgrim Place, Claremont Manor and Mt. San Antonio Gardens. Real estate tends to be expensive, reflecting Claremont's desirability and California prices in general. A review of Yahoo Real Estate for all of Claremont in late 2007 found 208 homes listed on the MLS with a median asking price of $615,000. |
