What La Jolla is like for active adults
Baby boomers will find a retirement lifestyle in La Jolla, California (population 42,000), that is tops for scenery, climate, and proximity to the rest of the world. La Jolla features magnificent estate homes set atop hills and small mountains, nestled by the ocean in an upscale community.  The Village (of La Jolla) is its charming downtown area. La Jolla, population 42,000, is actually part of the city of San Diego.

There are many communities within La Jolla, often with confusing names. For example The Village (of La Jolla) is the downtown, as opposed to the residential neighborhood of La Jolla Village. La Jolla (Farms), (Shores), and (Heights) are similarly named neighborhoods. A great range of active adult and 55+ communities are nearby, if not in La Jolla.

The main drawback to living in La Jolla is the expensive housing. Starter homes tend to be in the $1 million range. Fortunately there are apartments that can be had for less, either as condos or as rentals. Surrounding areas tend to be slightly less expensive, the more so as one goes away from the water. This part of southern California has been hard hit by the real estate crisis; prices have fallen a great deal. In the San Diego Metro the median sales price in late 2009 was $378,000 (NAR data). Zillow's Home Value Index for La Jolla in late 2009 was pegged at $1,123,100.

La Jolla is located in San Diego County in southern California. The name is pronounced "Lah HOY-Ya." For a list of profiles of over 500 cities and towns go to retirement community reviews, - and here is more information on taxes and what it is like to retire in California.
