What Niantic is like for active adults
Niantic is a small town on the Long Island Sound coast of Connecticut. This former fishing village has about 6,000 residents and is in one of the nicest stretches of CT - between Old Saybrook and New London.  Boating and fishing are fantastic from here, and so is the New England charm. Average home sales were above $300,000 for a while in 2006-7, but have dropped back into the high $200's. Obviously homes near the water are worth much more. The nearby towns of Stonington, Lyme, and Mystic are also great retirement communities.

What is special about this community
Niantic is a very charming town and a wonderful place to live if you are a sailor, artist, or writer. Very close to the casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun

What is not special about this community
Niantic and Connecticut in general is an expensive place to live. New Englanders have a reserve that can be hard to penetrate if you are not from the area

Cultural environment

Not too much is going on in Niantic from a cultural standpoint, although the local art and antiques scene is lively. Fortunately New Haven, Providence, and Hartford are not far away. Two of the largest casinos in the world, Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun, have world class entertainment and sports just a short drive from Niantic.

Transportation
Niantic is well-connected. From Old Saybrook you can take Amtrak to NY or Boston, as well as the Shoreline East to New Haven.  There are some small airports nearby, but great service is available from either Hartford or Providence (less than 1 hour away).  I 95 is close by and also connects in Old Saybrook with the convenient Rte 9 (going north)
