Where to Retire in Wilmington-DE and Home Prices

Although it has an industrial base, a high crime rate and large population of poor people, there are certain areas where new residents might find it attractive.
The median price of a home in Wilmington was about $186,000 in mid 2015, according to Zillow.com.


What is special about Wilmington-DE

Deleware is a college town and the city is revamping the Riverfront area with shops and apartments. Many festivals occur during the spring and summer; Wilmington has nine historic districts and over 55 parks; it is a little above average in walkability.


What is not special about Wilmington-DE

Although the city is working to make it safer, Wilmington has a very high crime rate; Wilmington does experience snow storms.


Who will like retirement in Wilmington-DE

Retirees who would like a college town near the water and is somewhat walkable. Wilmington has an active and diverse ethnic population and festivals to celebrate the many different cultures.


Local economy is driven by

Wilmington has made itself attractive to corporations and there are several headquartered there. It's a national center for the credit card industry and many insurance companies as well as financial corporations.


Climate and Physical Environment

Wilmington has cool to cold winters and hot and humid summers.  The average temperature in January is 32 degrees. Winters can be mild, yet Wilmington has experienced some major snowstorms.  The average July temperature is 76 degrees, although many summer days can be in the 90's.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Because of the diverse ethnic population, Deleware celebrates with an Italian festival, a Greek festival, along with Polish, African American and Hispanic celebrations.  The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is an annual event, as is the  Riverfront Blues Festival.  The city has been revitalizing a former shipyard area known as Wilmington Riverfront, which includes a children's museum, shops, dining, theater company and a high-rise luxury apartment building.



Crime in Wilmington is very high - about three times the national average.

Wilmington does have an Amtrak station and New Castle Airport; Wilmington is a little above average in walkability when compared to other communities.
