| What Daytona Beach is like for active adults |
The retirement community of Daytona Beach is also a tourist destination and community of 64,000 located in the northern portion of Florida’s east coast. It attracts more than 8,000,000 visitors a year. Blessed with many nicknames, it is known as “The Birthplace of Speed”, thanks to its hard beaches where early automobile speed demons raced and broke records. The speed tradition lives on with the Daytona 500 and biker conventions such as “Biketoberfest” and “Daytona Beach Bike Week”. Collegians have long come here in droves for spring break, but recent efforts to crack down on rowdyism have successfully stemmed that tide. The city incorporates the towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze. It is home to several colleges, including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Daytona Beach gives retirees an alternative to living in the big city or in a very affluent community. This diverse city has a mild climate in the winter.
For retirement living options people can choose from beachfront living on the barrier island, or more traditional housing and adult communities on the mainland and across the intercoastal waterway. Home prices have fallen steeply since 2006. The average price was about $127,000 in the 3rd quarter of 2009, well off the year earlier period. Many desirable rental apartments are available for less than $1000 per month.
