What New Smyrna Beach is like for active adults
New Smyrna Beach is a peaceful beach community of 22,000 located in the northern portion of Florida’s east coast. It prides itself on being a laid back coastal community, free of crowds and pollution. The city incorporates the city of Coronado Beach. New Smyrna Beach was the center of intense real estate speculation during the 1920’s; about 800 buildings from that era survive. After the boom a severe depression lasted until after WW II, from which time the area has steadily grown.

New Smyrna Beach gives retirees an alternative to living in the big city or in a very affluent community. Active adults 55+ can choose from beachfront living on the barrier island, or more traditional housing and adult communities on the mainland and across the intercoastal waterway. With an average age of 56, the community is definitely a popular retirement community. There are some condos and homes on the market, as well as many high rise apartments overlooking the ocean at much higher prices. Many desirable rental apartments are available for less than $1000 per month. The average sales price in the 1st quarter of 2008 was about $230,000, well below the 2006-7 average. New Smyrna Beach is located in Volusia County.
