What Bluffton is like for active adults

Bluffton is a small town with a population of about 13,000 (but 37,000 in the area), on the coast of South Carolina just off of Hilton Head Island and near the Georgia border.  Home to many retirement communities (see link at top right), the town is located on a bluff overlooking the May River in an area long known for tourism. In the old town near the river, residents will discover art and antique galleries and the Riverfront Pocket Park and Garden. The area is famous for its Bluffton oysters, and in town the oldest continuous oyster-shucking facility in South Carolina is a local attraction. Originally the town was confined to 1 square mile, but it has since then annexed over 32,000 acres for future development. The University of South Carolina Beaufort-New River campus was a welcome new addition to this area. Savannah is 18 miles away. Bluffton is located in Duval County.  For a review of the retirement situation in the entire "low country" in this region of SC, go to our article, "Low Country is High on Boomer Retirements"

Bluffton and Surrounding Area
If you like a slower pace of life, very mild winters nice summers and an abundance of things to do, this area is for you. We recently moved from Louisville, KY as we enter early retirement. The people are very friendly and while looking at the entire area we settled on Bluffton. We are close to everything, Hilton Head 12 miles Beaufort 20 miles and Beautiful Savanah 18 miles...Of course the city of Charleston offers many things to do and is a short 60 miles away...Why we chose Bluffton was because this is a growing town with many new communities however it still has its old town charm with its many shops and restaurants...We are near the water as almost everyone is..The taxes are much lower and it is a great mixture of young and old here...It is such a relaxing place and people are out all the time visiting which we find pleasant..Back in Kentucky a lot of shutins and people to themselves...The traffic here tends to be bad in the months of May thru August as the tourist expand the population greatly. We for one don\'t mind the tourist as we were one ourselves for many years because of them our taxes are lower and we are seeing growth into our area with new buildings job opportunities for those who want jobs and new stores and restaurants..As we approach our first fall here we as a family are looking forward to the many things that this area has to offer. The museums, water and activity around it, the fairs and of course the great restaurants... Of course we plan to visit Saint Augustine, Jekyll Island, Jacksonville, Charleston as well as the many things to do in this area. Should be a great fall and winter, no more snow and cold, just sun, beach and water. So come on down and enjoy the slow life, it will be the best and most rewarding time of your life...
